* * *vicino/vi't∫ino/Per scegliere il corretto equivalente inglese dell'italiano vicino tra near, nearby, close, next to, beside, by, around, neighbouring, neighbour ecc., bisogna prima stabilire se vicino è usato come aggettivo, avverbio, nella locuzione prepositiva vicino a oppure come sostantivo, e se dal punto di vista semantico si riferisce allo spazio, al tempo o ad altro, e se è inteso in senso proprio o figurato. Esempi in frase interrogativa indiretta sono chiedi a tua moglie se è già pronta = ask your wife if she is ready yet, e mi domando se sono già arrivati = I wonder if they are there yet. - Quando già indica ripetizione di quanto è avvenuto in precedenza, nel passato, si può usare before al posto di already: te l'ho già detto = I've told you before (oppure: I've already told you). - Gli esempi mostrano le diverse possibili posizioni di questi avverbi inglesi: already può stare in fondo alla frase, seguire l'ausiliare se il verbo è composto, ma precede il verbo (ad eccezione di to be) se questo è in forma semplice; yet e before stanno solitamente in fondo alla frase. - Va infine notato che already e yet sono spesso usati con il passato semplice nell'inglese americano, e quest'uso si sta diffondendo anche nell'inglese britannico: gli ho già parlato = I already spoke to him; hai già mangiato? = did you eat yet?
